不定詞


1 be + to

予定/義務/可能/意図/運命を表す。

I am to see him this afternoon.
(今日の午後 私は彼に会う予定です。)   <予定>
You are to pay the money at once.
(君はすぐにそのお金を払うべきです)   <義務>
Not a star was to be seen.
(星 ひとつ見えなかった)    <可能>
※可能を表す不定詞は 受け身が多い
If you are to go there, you should take a taxi.
(そこへ行くつもりなら、タクシーに乗ったほうがよいですよ) <意図>
The old man was never to see his home again.
(その老人は 再び故郷に帰らぬ運命でした。)  <運命>

2  不定詞を含む慣用表現

■  All you have to do is (to) do your best.
=You have only to do your best.
(君は最善を尽くしさえすれば良い)
■ All we can do is (to) wait patiently.
(私たちにできることはせいぜい待つことだ)
■ We have yet to achive our aim.
 (私たちは まだ 目的を達していない)
■  He had the kindness to lend me some money.
 = He was kind enough to lend me some money.
 = He was so kind as to lend me some money.
    (彼は親切にもお金を私に貸してくれた)
■ I cannot but ask him. = I cannot help asking him.
  (私は彼に頼まざるをえない)
■  The baby does nothing but cry.
 (その赤ん坊は泣いてばかりいる)

3 独立不定詞

To be honest with you, I don't like her way of speaking.

( 正直言うと、私は彼女の話しぶりが好きになれない)


to make matters worse (さらに悪いことには)
to start with = to begin with (まずはじめに)
to be brief (手短に言うと)
needless to say (言うまでもなく) strange to say (奇妙なことに)
to say nothing of ~ (~は言うまでもなく) etc
